Get broadband at home

Now you’ve got to grips with the how to use computers and the internet, you might be thinking about getting connected at home. Here's some useful information about how to get started.

What is broadband?

The way most people get online at home is by having their telephone line converted to ‘broadband’. This means that it will still act as a telephone line, and you’ll still be able to talk on it, but it will also allow you to connect your computer up to the internet. Most up-to-date computers will connect to broadband, and you’ll also need a router which will usually be provided by your internet service provider (this is the company who will provide you with your broadband).

Once you’ve got broadband, you’ll be able to visit web pages, watch videos, download photos and songs on your computer at home. Most broadband packages will give you a certain amount of data you can use each month, which is measured in gigabytes (“gb”). As a guide, 10gb will let surf the web as much as you like, send and receive 6,000 emails, view up to 5 hours of BBC iPlayer and download over 500 songs.  Broadband speed is important, this is usually measured in megabytes (Mb) per second. The speed is likely to vary depending on where you live. Between 8 and 20 Mb broadband is considered fast enough for good quality domestic use.
